How long does a tank take to drain under gravity, and how does the outflow fall as the level drops? For a company in oilfield chemicals, Gilbert Brault built an interactive model that answers this from the tank's dimensions. The physics (Torricelli's law and a mass balance) is set out step by step, and the level over time is computed by solving the resulting equation. A slider sets the liquid level on a drawing of the tank, and a Simulate button animates the draining at ten times real speed. The model runs in a container and opens in a web browser as a small application.
